Back at the beginning of the month during the Fiesta de San Jorge (Festival of Saint George, Patron Saint of Benabarre), Bubba actually got to take the stage and play drums for 3 songs live for the festival to a screaming crowd of or party goers. Beau got to do sound and run the light board for the entire show, which made it extra special. Watching him up there doing his thing with Beau by my side making the light show really pop was an incredible feeling. He was so jazzed all day, and that energy carried him late into the night, long after it was past my personal bedtime. The whole weekend was long, loud, and colorful. And sleepless.
3 of the major local bars and cafes closed at roughly the same time, the owners going on slightly overlapping vacations. It left the local townies with a perfect opportunity to sleep it off, but causing some of the English tourists to complain loudly in the street (thinking no one could understand them) that nothing was open. While the sound of conversation and laughing and the gentle clinking of glasses and plates from the bar on the street above us is actually kind of nice background noise to daily life, I'm honestly enjoying the reprieve.
School is officially out for summer. As per my interim blog post, Robert has officially graduated from high school! It’s wild how fast time moves. The graduation ceremony was a beautiful capstone to all his hard work, state-side and here (imagine going to high school in a foreign language and learning that language at the same time... And succeeding!) and he’s officially stepped over the threshold into early stages of adulthood. He's going to take the next year off to really get the language mastered so the following year he can go to music school in Huesca, where he will board during the week and come home on weekends. I'm glad for the extra time, I'm not quite ready to let him go yet.
With school out, we are shifting gears into that slow, unstructured summer pace, and we’re all trying to find our footing in the new routine... while trying to keep cool. Just in time, the community piscina [pool] is open for business, and not a second too soon with the heatwave that's been plaguing Europe. Honestly though, after spending most of my life in the South, I've been hotter. Thankfully, the humidity is low.
Out in the huerto [vegetable garden], things have absolutely exploded. After all the prep work, structural building, and constant tending, everything is popping off at once. The green is taking over, potatoes (308 of them...) are flowering, the climbing tomato are scaling their supports, peppers reaching for the sky. It feels like every time I walk out there, something new has sprouted. The plants are absolutely going bonkers for the heat. Our kind neighbors have been feeling it too, we keep getting gifts of produce from their huertos finding it's way into our arms and bicycle baskets. Chard, lettuces, fresh eggs! I've never had so many zucchinis in my fridge at once. I might have to find a new way to cook them...
Also, excellent news, we got oura NIEs (Foreigner Identification Numbers). Months and months and MONTHS of hard work, Beau spending hours translating stuff and talking to people, have finally paid off, so we can officially moved forward with getting Studio Rorebeck rolling in the EU. It's going to hopefully be a busy July, and beyond.
So, that is the view from our corner of the world. Between the graduation whirlwind, the garden keeping us on our toes, and the summer heat settling in, life is full... my brain is processing it all in slow motion lately. We are taking things one day at a time, enjoying the fresh produce, and spending as much time in the sombra [shade] as possible.
